The Irish mobster Gerry Hutch, known as The Monk, who was arrested last Wednesday, October 23 in Lanzarote, is seeking to leave Tahíche prison through an agreement with the Spanish justice system. This has been assured by the Irish media Sunday Worldthe second most popular in the Republic of Ireland, which has added that The Monk is trying to get out on bail

Irish tabloids have claimed that Hutch has told the judge that "he is willing to pay a sum of money and hand over his passport" to be released this Monday on bail from Tahíche prison.

For the moment, the Court handling the case has assured La Voz that it cannot provide information about the case because it remains under seal and the Court's Communication Office assured just three days ago that the investigation was still ongoing.

Of the nine detainees in the police operation investigating the alleged criminal organization for money laundering, the judge responsible for the case only ordered the provisional imprisonment of two of them last Friday, the alleged ringleaders. According to information published by the newspaper La Provincia, the two detainees sent to prison were Gerry Hutch himself and his right-hand man Neil F., while the other seven arrested were released on bail with measures.

Hutch has a real estate business on the island and was enjoying his retirement life in Tías until he was arrested. He had only been away from legal proceedings for a year and a half, since in April 2023 he was acquitted of a murder charge for which he was arrested in one of his homes in Fuengirola, in Malaga.

Currently, the Irish tabloid The Irish Sun, links The Monk with a multi-million dollar business in which he allegedly smuggled cigarettes into Dublin. A source from the Irish police revealed to the same media that "cigarette smuggling is now almost as big as drug smuggling."

In addition, according to the newspaper La Provincia, the operation is investigating the hostels managed by Hutch in Lanzarote. Furthermore, the Irish press assures that the 14 houses and apartments he has bought on the island in recent years were also searched.
