The Court of Instruction number 1 of Arrecife allows the capital City Council to exercise the private prosecution to claim the damages caused in the city by the arsonist arrested last April, and alleged perpetrator of several crimes of damage by intentional fires.

The presiding judge of the Court of Instruction Number 1 of Arrecife, Jesús Amate García, is in charge of instructing the procedure. After the decision, the Arrecife City Council claims 60,000 euros for the damages caused.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, had instructed the Legal Advice of the City Council to appear in this case and exercise the private prosecution. In an appearance that took place on May 7, the lawyer of the Municipal Legal Advice provided the documentation certifying the public damages and demands the claim of 58,254.10 euros for the urban furniture and burned containers, among other public elements.

In the case are present 14 complainants and the City Council of the capital. The neighbors affected by the fires caused by this arsonist, who has a police record, will quantify the damages to their respective properties (among which are communities of owners of affected buildings).

It should be remembered that the National Police of Arrecife arrested in mid-April a 42-year-old man, with a police record, as the alleged perpetrator of several crimes of damage by intentional fires. In addition, between March 8 and 13 of this year, several fires occurred in central streets of the capital of Lanzarote. A total of 21 containers, nine vehicles and numerous damages to facades, including a school, were affected by the fires.

In order to determine the origin of these fires, an arduous police investigation was activated in which the investigators confirmed that they were intentional, thus focusing efforts on identifying the person responsible for them. The court ordered the preventive detention of this alleged perpetrator.

The mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, has remarked that from the Consistory "the private prosecution will be undertaken when intentional damage to the public elements of the city is verified".

Now, the Court number 1 of the capital of Lanzarote instructs these proceedings, where the City Council of Arrecife exercises the private prosecution. When there is a final judgment, the city council will urge that the culprit respond with his current or future assets to these damages.
