The demonstrations against mass tourism held in April throughout the Canary archipelago and then spread throughout the country, are not reflected in a decrease in tourist flows.
Quite the opposite. Tourism continues to increase in Lanzarote, specifically between January and July there has been a growth of 7.3% to a total of 1,945,669 million tourists, which is about 150,000 more tourists than last year. (In a previous report, La Voz mistakenly published that the growth amounted to 14.3% and in absolute numbers 300,000).
In the same period of last year, 1,802,443 million tourists arrived. And there is no indication that the island's infrastructure and public services are adapting to the growing number of visitors.
The first nationality among visitors, as usual, is British. Almost one million British people have visited the island between January and July, according to data from the latest Statistics of Tourist Movements at Borders of the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), published by the Lanzarote Data Center.
Next, more than 200,000 Irish and as many Germans, followed by national tourism which reached 158,700 travelers.
From France, the fifth market for Lanzarote today, 137,000 people arrived, while about 50,000 people from each of the following markets: Netherlands, Italy and Belgium.
The list is completed by 34,000 visitors from the Nordic countries and more than 80,000 travelers, which the ISTAC groups under the heading 'other countries'.
