The Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote and the Club of Rome are jointly organizing, this Thursday, December 15th and Friday, December 16th, the seminar “The limits of the planet-Lanzarote and its limits” in the assembly hall of the Cabildo

In the words of Nicolás Saavedra, coordinator of the Biosphere office, the objectives of the seminar are to "discuss the biophysical limits of the planet and defend the island culture that has so often advocated its adaptation to territorial limits.”

The Club of Rome is a think tank founded in 1968, which brings together a hundred scientists, economists, former politicians and industrialists from more than 50 countries concerned about complex problems facing the world.

This year marks half a century since this institution published the report "The Limits to Growth”, which had a great media and scientific impact, and which offered different scenarios on the evolution of humanity based on variables such as population growth, pollution or the availability of resources.

Now, when the planet has just exceeded 8 billion inhabitants, the Club of Rome has launched a new report under the name “Beyond the Limits”, whose conclusions will be presented at the seminar.

What are the biophysical limits of the planet, and of Lanzarote?

The conclusions of this new report will open the debate on the biophysical limits of the planet as well as those of Lanzarote

The speakers at the seminar “The limits of the planet. Lanzarote and its limits” include Carlos Álvarez Pereira, aeronautical engineer, vice president of the International Club of Rome; Gabriela Vázquez Macías, graduate in Biotechnology and technician at the Entretantos Foundation; Daniel Ruiz López, UN coordinator and member of the Canary Islands Group of the Club of Rome; and Mario Ferrer Peñate, historian, journalist and coordinator of Digital Memory of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

Likewise, Famara Guadalupe Hernández, graduate in Geography and Land Management from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), will be present as speakers at these conferences; Miguel Ángel Robayna Fernández, professor of Philosophy and Ethics, activist and member of the Canarian Foundation for critical thinking La Colectiva and Muévete por el Clima; and Jonathan Sicilia, urban planner and founder of URBANFIX.

The Scientific Cabinet of the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote will also participate in this seminar and the economist, winegrower, founding partner and member of the agroecological-based cooperative project SAT El Jable, Ascensión Robayna, will moderate the round table on the role of women in systems science.

Attendance at the seminar “The limits of the planet. Lanzarote and its limits” is free and open upon registration. The session can also be followed through the website of the Reserve of the Biosphere of Lanzarote.
