Inter-island passenger traffic has managed to increase its figures in the month of April with 94,583 passengers, but it is on the verge of reaching pre-pandemic figures, which exceeded the barrier of 100,000 people, according to a report from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
Air transport between Lanzarote and the rest of the islands has been on the rise since the beginning of the year until marking its best figure of 2022 in April. The increase has been exponential (32,144 more passengers) compared to January, when 62,439 people traveled.
In addition, the accumulated in 2022 from January to April is 316,226, compared to 160,062 in 2021, which represents an increase of 97.6% this year.
This very positive figure is added to those registered with peninsular connections, which managed to mark its best data since 2017 last month, as a direct consequence of the Easter period, when air connections increased with the whole country to meet passenger demand.
However, it is important to mention that the movement of inter-island passengers with Lanzarote is still below pre-pandemic numbers, since in 2019 there were 100,869 passengers, of which 67,924 corresponded to connections with Gran Canaria, 32,724 with Tenerife and 221 with Fuerteventura.
The connection with Gran Canaria is still the most popular
Traffic with the capital island of Las Palmas brings together the bulk of passengers in connections with Lanzarote, with 61,458 people in April, compared to 32,953 from Tenerife.
It should be noted that both routes have seen their data grow since the beginning of the year and compared to the previous year. The accumulated in 2022 with Gran Canaria is 210,057 passengers, compared to 112,989 in 2021, which represents 85.9% more this year. For its part, Tenerife achieved 105,032 passengers in 2022 and 46,963 in 2021, 123.6% more.
Finally, connections between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura show a trend totally opposite to the rest of the islands, as it has been decreasing since January, with the exception of a circumstantial rise in March.
Specifically, in April 172 passengers traveled between the two neighboring islands, compared to 378 who did so in January of this year. For its part, the accumulated with Fuerteventura stands at 1,137 passengers, compared to 106 in 2021, 972.6% more this year.
It is important to mention that in 2021 there were four connections with the island of El Hierro, but this year there has been none, so far.
