Despite the demonstrations against mass tourism that began in the Canary Islands and spread to different parts of the country, Spain continues to break tourism records, which is reflected in the construction of more hotels.
In July alone, Spanish hotels registered more than 44 million overnight stays, 2.15% more than in 2019, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
According to the Lumen group, specialized in the installation of glazing solutions, there has been a 65% increase in hotel construction in Spain in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
Spain had 16,778 hotels in July and in 2025 alone, another 220 hotels are expected to open in Spain, 24% of which will be high-end. In Lanzarote, after the opening of the largest hotel on the island, the Barceló Playa Blanca, with 1,200 beds, two more hotels will open next year in Arrecife, one next to the Parque Islas Canarias, and another in the Cuatro Esquinas area.
Also the luxury group of American capital, Hyatt, plans to open two new hotels in Lanzarote although it has not yet revealed its location and the Gloria Thalasso & Hotels Group is currently building another hotel in Costa Teguise. The latter location also plans to open a new tourist apartment complex.
Investment in the hotel sector in Spain during the first half of 2024 reached 1,393 million euros, according to the Hotel Investment report prepared by the real estate consultancy Colliers.
