The Parliament of the Canary Islands, with the support of the Government Groups formed by Coalición Canaria, the Partido Popular, ASG and AHI, in addition to Vox, have rejected prohibiting the approval of more vacation home licenses in the Archipelago until the new decree law, still in public consultation, comes into force.

The announcement of the new Law on Tourist Use of Homes, which aims to be more restrictive with new registrations and with the requirements of those already installed, has generated a call effect in the market and has triggered the incorporation of more homes to the vacation rental market.

According to data from the Canary Islands Tourism Observatory, composed of the two public universities of the Archipelago, vacation homes have grown by 51.8% in Lanzarote in just over ten months. With data updated to April 17, 2024, the island of volcanoes experienced the largest increase in tourist homes in the market of the entire Archipelago.

As of June 2023, the vacation homes registered in the General Tourism Registry of the Canary Islands of the Government of the Canary Islands amounted to 5,198 in Lanzarote. Currently, with data from April 17, 2,693 more homes have been registered, reaching 7,891.

It should be noted that not all homes offered on digital rental platforms are legally registered. For this reason, last May, the National Institute of Statistics collected 7,226 homes on the island, because it compiled, through the scraping technique, which extracts data through computer programs, the different offers on digital platforms and eliminates duplicate homes. The data offered by the Canary Islands Tourism Observatory, only collects homes registered in accordance with the law.

With figures collected by La Voz, nine days later, 135 more tourist accommodations have been registered on the island, reaching 8,026. The registered places on the island of volcanoes already have capacity for 35,322 people.

The growth of vacation homes in Lanzarote is only closely followed by Tenerife, the Canary Island that already has more properties for tourist exploitation.

By municipalities, Yaiza, Tías and Teguise are the ones with the most vacation homes in Lanzarote. Thus, they have experienced growth between 30 and 60% in the last nine months. The municipality of Tías is also one of the Canary Island tourist towns where vacation homes have grown the most between June 2023 and April of this year, going from 1,200 vacation homes to 2,000 in April.

In Yaiza there are more than 2,200 registered homes, compared to the 1,600 that already existed in June. In Teguise, the number of vacation homes went from 1,100 to 1,700. In contrast, in Arrecife, the number of vacation home places has grown by 83.64% between June and April. In fact, it went from having 1,821 places to 3,344 in April.
