The Canary Islands Government Council will study this Monday a bill to regulate the growth of vacation homes in the archipelago and reduce their impact on conventional rentals.
Vacation homes already represent 33% of the accommodation offer in Lanzarote. The municipalities of Yaiza (17.6%) and Haría (15.8%) have the highest percentage of vacation homes on the island.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, there are more than 42,000 homes used for this purpose and 179,000 beds, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) for 2023.
The Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, who will be in charge of presenting the bill, explained that the current vacation home regulation has a "very limited and minimal" content, which does not contemplate any tourism, urban planning, or territorial planning."
The Minister emphasized that "the new regulation will protect small owners and curb irregular supply." Various departments are participating in the initiative, as it addresses tourism, housing, land planning, environmental, and consumer protection competencies.
