57% of Lanzarote residents consider the housing situation to be the main problem on the island, triple the number who chose the shortcomings of public health, according to the latest Island Issues survey by the Cabildo.
And indeed, housing prices have skyrocketed on the island in the last ten years, although more in some municipalities than in others.
The most significant increase has occurred in Yaiza, where prices have risen by 143% compared to 2015. If at that time the square meter was 1,552 euros, it now reaches 3,774 euros.
Tías has experienced the second largest jump in prices in the last ten years. In the municipality that includes Puerto del Carmen, the square meter currently amounts to 3,727 euros, 112% more than what it was in 2015 when it was 1,754 euros.
Apartments in Arrecife, where the square meter marked 1,906 euros in April, cost more than double what they did ten years ago, specifically 103% more than what was paid in 2015, when the meter was 936 euros.
Meanwhile, the average housing prices in the municipality of Teguise have increased by 84% compared to ten years ago. The square meter cost 1,539 euros then, while it currently marks 2,845 euros.
Haría and San Bartolomé have experienced similar percentage increases, of 62% and 64% respectively.
In the north, the square meter has gone from costing 1,237 euros ten years ago to 2,006 euros currently, while in San Bartolomé it was 1,401 euros a decade ago and 2,307 euros last April.
Finally, Tinajo, which has experienced the smallest increase in prices on the island, although not negligible, of 42%. If the square meter cost 1,191 euros ten years ago, it is now worth 1,700 euros.
As a result of the evolution of prices, Arrecife has ceased to be the cheapest municipality to buy a home, a title now held by Tinajo.
