Employment grows in the Canary Islands above the national average

The archipelago is the second autonomous community where the most employment has been recovered in the last year

The Government of the Canary Islands celebrated this Thursday the EPA data for the third quarter of the year, which shows a 5.3% increase in employment since 2022, reflecting that it is "on the right track."

The Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isabel León, highlighted the fact that the growth of employment in the Canary Islands has been above the national average (5.3% compared to the national 3.51%).

The autonomous executive has defended that the Canary Islands is the second autonomous community where the most employment has been recovered in the last year based on the EPA data for the third quarter of 2023, only surpassed by the Valencian Community (5.93%).

De León indicated that these employment data "reflect that we are on the right track, although we must continue working to improve the labor insertion of the most vulnerable groups."

 

Good data for young people

León highlighted that the employment figures are "good" at an interannual level in all age groups, but especially in the under 25s, where it has grown by 45.13 percent.

And, despite the slight decrease compared to the previous survey, the Government indicated that the islands achieved the third highest employment rate since 2008, of 50.13%.

By sex, female employment grew by 3,900 people compared to the previous quarter, while male employment decreased by 5,100.

As for the sectors of activity, industry led the creation of employment in the Canary Islands, adding 7,000 jobs compared to the second quarter (+14.37%), followed by construction, with 3,000 more employed (+4.73%). 

However, in agriculture (-7.97%) and in the services sector (-1.07%), there were decreases.

With regard to unemployment, the number of unemployed in the Canary Islands decreased this quarter by 25,000 people compared to the same period of the previous year (-12.24%), which makes the archipelago the second autonomous community with the largest reduction in unemployment in absolute terms.

According to the EPA, the autonomous government indicated, the decrease of 12.24% in the Canary Islands was much greater than that of the national total, of 4.20%.
