The Canary Islands has led the creation of employment in Spain until September, registering an annual growth of 7.89%, a total of 69,300 more employed, although in the last quarter this indicator has fallen by 0.18%, that is 1,700 people, according to data from the Active Population Survey released this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics.
In annual terms, the Canary Islands has been the second region where the most jobs have been created, although the unemployment rate remains the second highest in the country and stands at 17.73%.
The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, stated this Thursday that the data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) for the third quarter of 2022 confirm the positive trend, “because we are below 18% unemployment when we exceeded 30%, and that is despite the fact that the data for this third quarter correspond to the summer months, which are complex in the islands because they are not those of the high tourist season, apart from the fact that many people end their contracts in Education as teachers to be reincorporated in September”, he explained.
The head of the Executive maintains that these data reflect that we are on “the right track” to face the coming months, which correspond to the high season for tourism. “The way is to generate employment, that there are more people with an occupation and with more economic resources to fight against the wage gap and poverty”, he stressed. In his opinion, both civil society and administrations must continue with this effort to improve the data in the future or better prepare the Canary Islands to respond adequately when they are not so positive.
In addition, between July and September, the EPA places the Canary Islands among the communities where activity has decreased the most, which translates into the loss of 2,600 assets (-0.22%), a group that decreases by 2,300 people (-0.20%), in relation to the third quarter of 2021.
The number of unemployed in the Canary Islands rises to 204,200 people, an indicator that has decreased by 0.39% in the last quarter, when 800 fewer unemployed have been counted, although its annual decrease has been 25.95%, that is, in 71,600 people.
