The president of the Canarian Nationalist Group, David Toledo Niz, asked the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, this Tuesday, during the government control session in Parliament, to carry out an analysis of the latest unemployment data in the Autonomous Community. Figures, which, according to Canarian nationalists, require the implementation of "measures to reduce it".

“In the second quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate at the state level was 11.6%, while in the Canary Islands it was 15.2%, being the third Autonomous Community with the highest figure”, Toledo pointed out, who, in addition, stressed that this situation "is not homogeneous throughout society, but varies depending on sex, educational level, place of residence, age or duration of unemployment".

“In the second quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate in the Canary Islands was 15.2%, the third Autonomous Community with the highest figure”

“The number of unemployed people in the islands is almost 173,000, long-term unemployment increased this month by 0.11% and the group over 45 years of age represents 61% of the total. All this is inherited from the previous government, but it is up to us to put in place measures that help to reduce that figure and respond to the Canarian society as a whole”, said the nationalist parliamentarian.

In his response, the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stated that in order to act, "the first thing to do is to assume that the fight against long-term unemployment", which requires a combination of "political decisions, training and skills recycling programs together with the creation of job opportunities for this social sector and fiscal measures to encourage the hiring of those who have more difficulties in joining the labor market”.

Therefore, he recalled that it is important to continue working on the "creation of employment", but also on improving "job opportunities for all people" and to focus on "specific measures for the population that has more difficulties in accessing employment".
