By region, the Canary Islands has the lowest activity rate in the country among its citizens with disabilities since it only reaches 26.6%, according to a report 'Radiography of the labor market for people with disabilities', carried out by the Randstad Foundation together with Randstad Research.
Next are Andalusia (29.7%) and Galicia (29.9%), while the highest activity rates for people with disabilities occurred in La Rioja (44.5%), the Basque Country (43.2%) and the Community of Madrid (43.1%).
With data from 2022, the temporary employment company puts the number of active people in this group at 685,000 in the entire State, which is equivalent to an activity rate of 35.3%. On the contrary, 1.2 million people of working age remain inactive due to permanent disability or retirement.
However, unemployment has decreased in recent years
At the national level, however, progress can be seen since the unemployment rate for people with disabilities stood at 21.4% in 2022, which is the lowest record since 2014.
The analysis, prepared from the latest data provided by IMSERSO and INE in 2022, reflects that the total number of unemployed people with disabilities was 146,400 people, which represents a decrease of 3,700 people compared to 2021. This figure is even more significant when compared with the records since 2014, which reflect that, since then, more than 45,000 people have left the situation of unemployment.
In Spain, there is a population of 3.4 million people with a recognized disability, representing 7.1% of the total population. The population between 16 and 64 years old reaches 1.94 million, the highest figure since 2014.
Thus, they represent 6.3% of the total population of working age, a percentage that remains stable compared to 2021, but which represents a growth of more than 200,000 people in the last eight years.
The sociodemographic profile of people with disabilities
In general terms, the population with disabilities is concentrated in the highest age ranges. Thus, 40% are between 35 and 64 years old, while 48% are over 65 years old and only 5% are under 17 years old.
By type of disability, the most representative is osteoarticular (29%), followed by intellectual (18%) and chronic (16%). However, the greatest growth occurs in the group of other disabilities (7.3%) and in mixed disability (4.1%).
By sex, there are no relevant differences between the total number of men and women with disabilities, although the number of women tends to be lower up to 65 years of age, a trend that is reversed then with, in addition, greater degrees of disability among them.
The weight of the population with disabilities in Asturias, Cantabria, Murcia and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla exceeds 10% of their total population.
