The Canary Islands are the main destination for international tourists in January, and it was also the community that contributed the most to the overall growth of the month, registering 70,000 more international tourists than in January 2010. Germany, the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries were the issuing markets that had the most to do with this result.

Catalonia, with 21.4 percent of arrivals, experienced growth of close to 1 percent, due to the advance registered by the Italian market in this destination. France, the main issuing market, registered a decrease in the sending of tourists. The arrival of tourists to the Balearic Islands rose by 6.9 percent, with increases in the entry of travelers from the Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the Netherlands, fundamentally.

Germany and France registered growth of 5.5 and 0.6 percent, respectively. In the case of Germany, this increase has been concentrated in the Canary Islands, its main destination, while French citizens have intensified their trips to the Valencian Community. Catalonia, the main destination for French tourists, has however registered a decrease in arrivals.

The United Kingdom experienced a decrease of 5.3 percent in the sending of tourists in January, which was especially noticeable in Andalusia and Catalonia. However, the arrival of British tourists to the Canary Islands presented an important growth.

Among the other main markets, Italy stood out this month, with a significant increase of 36.1 percent, which has mainly favored Catalonia and the Community of Madrid. The Nordic countries have also presented a significant growth (10.7), which has been mainly reflected in the Canary Islands.

National data

Spain received a total of 2.66 million international tourists in January 2011, which has meant starting the year with a growth of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year, according to data from the Institute of Tourism Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce.

This increase represents the entry of 119,000 more tourists to our country than in January 2010, a month that was already especially positive for national tourism by registering the first increase in the entry of international tourists in 18 months.

The main issuing markets evolved favorably last January, with the exception of the United Kingdom.
