Two of the three taxi driver cooperatives of Lanzarote, with representation in six of the seven municipalities of the island, will meet this afternoon in Tías to decide whether to call a strike this Easter.

The strike would be called to protest the measures being prepared by the Cabildo, which would allow any taxi on the island to provide service when the capacity of taxis in a specific municipality is exceeded.

The Cabildo aims to provide a joint service at the island level, regardless of the municipality, when capacity is exceeded within a municipality to provide service on specific dates, for example during festivals, or in specific places, for example the airport.

The cooperatives calling the meeting are Norte and Sur, which bring together taxi drivers from Yaiza, Teguise, Tías, Haría and Tinajo; and Ajey Tamia, which represents taxi drivers from San Bartolomé. They are proposing a strike with minimum services between March 25 and 31.

The third cooperative on the island, San Marcial, which represents taxi drivers from Arrecife, is in favor of the Cabildo's approach. "It was about time someone protected the user. We do not agree with the strike, we prioritize the user," he explained to La Voz.
