Although the average salary, which is not the most common, rose in 2022 in the Canary Islands to 1,573 euros per month, a historical maximum in nominal terms, it is still the second lowest in Spain, only behind that of Extremadura.
In addition, the purchasing power of that salary is 7% lower than it was in 2009, when it reached its highest level, according to a report published by the company Adecco.
In Spain as a whole, the average salary increased by 4.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022 in year-on-year terms and reached a "new historical maximum", up to 1,823 euros per month, although the real purchasing power was similar to that of 1996 due to the high inflation of recent months.
According to the "Adecco Monitor of opportunities and satisfaction in employment", Madrid remains the autonomous community with the highest average salary, 2,135 euros per month, followed by País Vasco (2,103 euros), Navarra (1,969 euros) and Catalonia (1,958 euros).
These are the only four regions with an average salary that exceeds the national average, while at the other extreme are Extremadura, with an average salary of 1,486 euros per month, the Canary Islands, and then Murcia (1,585 euros).
Nationally, the average salary represents a purchasing power 10.1% below the highest in the historical series, which continues to be that of 2009. Statistically, Canarians have gained purchasing power in 2022 by 11.3%, but this is due to the "ERTE effect", that is, the normalization of employment in the Canary Islands took longer, which kept Canarian salaries depressed for longer".
