The Las Kellys Lanzarote Association staged a new protest on Wednesday in front of the HL Paradise Island hotel in Playa Blanca to denounce "fraudulent" hiring, as it claims that there are chambermaids who are "forced" to work between 8 and 9 hours a day with part-time contracts.
"It is not the first time that we have gathered at this hotel, or others of the same chain, and we do not like having to do it again. But when the situation does not change or worsens, it is our duty to demonstrate again and defend our rights and those of our colleagues," they point out from the group.
According to the association, the Labor Inspectorate has already been to the establishment, but the company "continues to turn a deaf ear to its recommendations and indications." Thus, it insists that part-time contracts are made but then the workers must fulfill the hours of a full day and even more, and "if they refuse they are fired."
"This situation is not only an abuse, but it shows how the company continues to hire fraudulently. And also these overtime hours are not only not paid but do not allow workers to contribute to Social Security in a dignified manner, thus putting their already precarious retirement at risk," Las Kellys warn.
That is why they have demonstrated again on Wednesday afternoon in front of this hotel, where they claim that there are also "psychological abuses and mistreatment of the company's managers towards the maids." "Before being workers, we are people and above all we are women; women who have learned to defend our rights and our dignity. And we are not going to allow any discriminatory treatment of our colleagues for defending their rights," warns the association, which maintains that "many of the problems" suffered by the maids are due to their "condition as women."
