Lanzarote's population growth accelerates, adding 4,500 residents in 2023

The population growth rate in Lanzarote (2.7%) is much higher than that of the archipelago as a whole (1.02%)

Provisional population data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) as of January 1, 2024, put the population increase in Lanzarote during the past year at 4,522 people

This growth means that the total resident population on the island reaches 163,543 inhabitants.

Pending the publication of the final data by the INE, these figures show that the island's population increase is accelerating. The previous year the INE put the island's population growth at 2,909 to 159,021 residents. 

In percentage terms, the population grew by 2.76% in 2023 and had done so by 1.82% the previous year

In the Canary Islands as a whole, the population grew by just over 1% last year.

 

One in three residents in Lanzarote is foreign

The number of residents with Spanish nationality in Lanzarote is 109,419 people, while the number of inhabitants of other nationalities is 54,124 citizens. 

In the Lanzarote population as a whole, there are more men (82,297) than women (81,246), although the female population predominates among foreigners. 

The population has also increased in the archipelago as a whole during 2023, by 22,997 people to a total of 2,236,013 residents. 

However, the percentage of growth in the whole of the Canary Islands (1.02%) is less than half of that which occurred in Lanzarote.
