The government group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has urged the Government of the Canary Islands to include a specific chapter of investments destined for La Graciosa in the autonomous budgets of 2025, currently in the processing phase.
This was decided in a plenary session by the island corporation, which bases its motion on the approval of Organic Law 1/2018, which recognized La Graciosa as the eighth inhabited island of the archipelago.
As the Cabildo recalled in a statement, La Graciosa has a stable population of about 700 inhabitants, which increases during the summer months and other holiday periods, and an annual flow of more than 500,000 tourists, so it "faces particular challenges that require special attention."
Among the specific needs of the island are the areas of purification and sanitation, health and education, security and emergencies, as well as cleaning and beautification, which "must be addressed through specific budget items."
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has pointed out the importance of this measure, since "La Graciosa is not only the eighth inhabited island of the Canary Islands, but is also a symbol of our identity and natural heritage."
For the island president, "it is essential" that the Government of the Canary Islands "recognizes its needs with specific investments in the next budgets", because it is "about the quality of life of the people of Graciosa and the sustainability of one of the most emblematic destinations of the archipelago."
The Councilor of Finance and Contracting of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Jesús Tovar, has assured that it is "essential" that the eighth island "has its own chapter, thus highlighting all the needs it requires."
