Lanzarote produced a total of 753,889 megawatt hours in 2022, which represents a growth of 17% compared to the previous year and shows the recovery of economic activity on the island.
However, compared to 2019, electricity production last year was 8.8% below pre-pandemic levels, according to data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), published by the Lanzarote Data Center.
The growth in electricity production was strongly noticed in the first months of 2022 in contrast to the tourist stoppage of the first months of 2021. There were year-on-year growth rates of over 20% in February, March, April and June, and they exceeded 30% in both May and July.
The contribution of renewables remained at 14.7%
In the second half of 2022, year-on-year growth was more moderate, in line with the recovery experienced in the second half of 2021. There was an increase in production of 11% in August, 8% in September, 5% in October and 3% in both November and December.
The share of renewable energy in Lanzarote's energy mix still does not exceed 15%. According to ISTAC data, which since the inauguration of the submarine electricity interconnection between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura last year, offers data jointly for both islands, electricity from renewables in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura totaled 218,784 megawatt hours, which represents 14.7% of the total production of both.
The vast majority of this clean energy, more than 85%, was from wind production, while 14.4% came from photovoltaic panels. The rest, around 0.6% was due to biogas.
