Lanzarote has added more than 4,000 new residents in the last year to a total of 161,378 inhabitants, according to preliminary population data published in July by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). A year ago there were 157,234 residents.

Since the island lost more than a thousand inhabitants in 2021, as a result of the mobility limitations that greatly affected the tourism sector, demographic growth has returned to an upward path.

As in the country as a whole, the vast majority of new residents in Lanzarote in the last year are foreigners. These are 3,273 people, bringing the total foreign population on the island to 51,983 residents. The number of nationals on the island has increased by 871 people to a total of 109,093 citizens.

By sex, in the total count, the majority are men (80,634), while the number of women amounts to 79,414 people. Among foreign residents, however, there are more women.

Spain adds half a million inhabitants

At the national level, the resident population increased by 135,186 people in the second quarter of 2023 and stood at 48,345,223 inhabitants as of July 1, 2023. It is the maximum value in the historical series. In annual terms, the estimated population growth is 537,611 people.

Spain's population growth was almost entirely due to the increase in people born abroad. The population born abroad was 8,457,886 people, higher than that of foreign nationality, due to the Spanish naturalization processes. The number of foreigners increased by 100,394 people during the second quarter, to a total of 6,335,419 as of July 1, 2023. The population of Spanish nationality increased by 34,792 people.
