The Hospiten Group reminds that periodic urological check-ups are key for the early detection of prostate cancer. In this sense, Hospiten's urology specialist, Ricardo Bernárdez Tesouro, insists that
these check-ups are necessary even without any symptoms, since it can be cured if detected in time.
Regarding detection procedures, the first test is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) which, depending on its values and interpretations, together with the physical examination, would help define the need for other tests such as resonance or prostate biopsy. Likewise, Dr. Bernárdez highlights that, "beyond the traditional detection methods, we can also highlight fusion biopsy, which with the combination of magnetic resonance imaging and an ultrasound creates detailed three-dimensional images of the prostate, offering an extremely reliable diagnosis."
According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, in 2022 there were 30,884 new cases of prostate cancer, an incidence that is expected to increase in the coming years, since this malignant tumor is the most frequent among men. Among the most determining risk factors, age and family history stand out.
The Hospiten specialist recalls that "beyond its risk factors, this cancer does not present symptoms in its early stages, so periodic check-ups become the main tool for its detection. If detected in time, it can be cured." Regarding treatments, the doctor details that its application depends on the stage of the cancer and the type of tumor. Prostate cancer can be treated initially in its lowest stages with active observation, and in those more advanced it is recommended to move on to surgical treatments, radiotherapy or palliative treatments in the case of elderly people.
Dr. Ricardo Bernárdez Tesouro highlights the experience of the urology service of the Hospiten Group, together with the multidisciplinary team of professionals who work daily in the prevention, detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
