The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, pointed out this Friday that it has been 40 days since the volcano on the island of La Palma began erupting on September 19, thus surpassing its predecessors in said territory, the Teneguía and the San Juan, and it "does not" seem to be near the end.

In this way, Torres has clarified that this is the volcano that "has caused the most damage to the territory, to private and also public property, to houses, to agricultural farms and still does not know when it is going to end," although he has admitted to getting up "every" day and going to sleep with the desire for it to come to an end "and be able to quantify all the damage."

The President of the Canary Islands has also referred to the aid that is being provided due to this eruption, pointing out in statements to journalists before attending a conference by socialist Héctor Gómez, that the regional Executive has taken charge "from day one, September 19, of all the costs of the displaced people in the shelter and hotels, about 500."

Likewise, he stated that the Canarian Executive has acquired two desalination plants for more than four million euros, to which he added that the Citizen Attention Office has been provided with more than 300,000 euros, and he recounted the approval of a single registry law decree; or the hiring of 30 people between psychologists and social workers to validate the properties that people have and be able to hand over the homes.

On the other hand, he indicated that the first batch of homes has already been purchased and the second is expected to be purchased next week, pointing out that currently "it is already being assessed to be able to deliver them.". In addition, he pointed out that the affected municipalities, such as El Paso, Los Llanos and Tazacorte, have been transferred 320,000 euros to "help in basic aspects."

Finally, Torres has also referred to the "important measures" approved by the central government, among which he cited the extension of the ERTE and the improvements for the self-employed until February 28 "especially for the island of La Palma", to which the economic items already approved in the Council of Ministers are added.

He added that affected municipalities, the Cabildo, the Canarian and central governments, the European Union and civil society have to contribute "as much as possible" because they are "facing something unprecedented, which is the reconstruction of an island"
