The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, has denied this Monday that there will be "layoffs or cuts" in the hospitals of the islands due to the deficit of 550 million euros that affects the budget of her department and that they are working to solve, EFE reports.

Monzón has indicated that the Ministry of Finance is addressing this issue and that "not only will there be cuts" but "reinforcements are being managed" to carry out the plan that she will present this Tuesday in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to "combat healthcare waiting lists in the islands" and an issue that was already addressed last week in the Health Commission.

The Minister has stated that "everything will remain the same", in response to the warning made by the president of Nueva Canarias, Román Rodríguez, that "contracts were not going to be able to be renewed" in some hospitals on the islands at the end of the year.

In addition, she added, they will have to "reinforce" certain services to implement the plan against waiting lists", as the intention is for there to be surgical activity on weekends and outside of normal working hours.

"We are worse than ever in the number of people who are on the waiting lists in the Canary Islands and committed to reversing this situation", said the Minister of Health.
