Canary Islands wants to use volcanic aggregates for construction

The Arovol project will try to ensure that recycling itself "makes money" for those who carry it out and it is not necessary to incentivize the need for recycling

The Ministry of Public Works of the Government of the Canary Islands and the business associations of the construction sector have continued to outline the guidelines of the Arovol project, an initiative that "pursues the reuse of volcanic aggregate in construction through a catalog that maximizes the amount of usable waste."

This was explained this Tuesday by the head of the Laboratory and Construction Quality Service of the Ministry of Public Works, Javier Jubera, who pointed out that practically all construction materials in the Canary Islands are born as a result of the volcanic nature of the islands, such as the picón blocks that are mixed with concrete to build infrastructures.

Jubera explained to the media that in the Canary Islands 900 kilos of aggregate per inhabitant are consumed in construction, while the sector between demolition and waste generates 400 kilos, of which they seek to "take advantage of at least 60%" to alleviate the extraction of natural aggregates and the management of waste from the sector, which accounts for 40% of the waste that is managed in the archipelago.

The Arovol project, he continued, will seek to classify waste, "give a quality to that waste" and manufacture construction products "of better quality and at a lower cost" thanks to the fact that volcanic aggregate maintains its properties after its destruction and will try to ensure that recycling itself "makes money" for those who carry it out and it is not necessary to incentivize the need for recycling.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francis González, explained that on this day four working tables will be launched to advance in a project "that is in a preparatory phase" and for which it is necessary to define the steps "hand in hand with an involved sector."

"From an environmental point of view we do not have aggregates, we cannot continue to destroy the territory, we have to recover it and learn that the waste resulting from construction work can be reused," González concluded.
