The three new courts, two in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria) and another in Granadilla de Abona (Tenerife), which were due to open in June 2023 but had no space to do so have come into operation this Monday.

The Regional Ministry of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security adds these new courts to the five already launched last June in different judicial districts of the archipelago, while working to enable a ninth, the Court of First Instance number 6 of Arrecife, by the end of December

According to the Ministry in a statement, these three new courts -one of first instance, another of instruction and the third of first instance and instruction- should have started their service in June 2023, but upon the arrival of the current government team "there was no local available for these judicial bodies".

That is why the Deputy Ministry of Justice requested an extension and promoted the processing of the corresponding lease files that would allow its location, the regional department said.

The courts of First Instance number 6 and Instruction number 4, both of the judicial district of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and First Instance and Instruction number 5 of Granadilla de Abona have 28 contracted officials that are distributed in six managers, 16 processors and 6 of judicial assistance.

In addition, the conditioning works and provision of means to carry out the services and attention to the citizens have also been done.

The Minister of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nieves Lady Barreto, visited this Monday the new courts of the municipality of the south of Gran Canaria, while the Deputy Minister of Justice, Cesáreo Rodríguez, has been in Granadilla de Abona.

"With these three courts, there are already eight that have come into operation in the Canary Islands in this year 2024, the same number as the entire previous legislature, which has meant a great effort by the staff of the Deputy Ministry of Justice and the General Directorate of Relations with the Administration of Justice, in order to have the spaces in time and be able to provide them with the necessary human and material resources," said the Minister.

Nieves Lady Barreto has advanced that in the next sectorial of Justice with the Ministry and the rest of autonomous communities, Canarias will propose that the opening of new judicial units "take into account the high degree of litigation in the Canary Islands", the highest in the country.

And she has recognized the high workload that is supported in many courts of the islands, thanking "the great effort" made by the staff of the Administration of Justice in the Canary Islands to face this situation, although in many cases it is unfeasible due to the volume of cases.
