The Deputy Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands and Director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Carlos Díaz, held a meeting this Friday with those responsible for the Management of Health Services of the Lanzarote Health Area in which the start-up of the implementation of the Unified Medical Record Viewer in all health centers on the island was discussed, as well as in the Local Clinic of La Graciosa, a meeting in which the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, participated.

Thus, since this Friday, health professionals from all health centers in Lanzarote and La Graciosa and from the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospitals and Insular Hospital of Lanzarote already have access to the complete medical history of patients, regardless of the health area to which they belong.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Health and Director of the SCS, Carlos Díaz, explained that "for the first time in the history of the Canary Islands, SCS health professionals can access the entire medical history of a patient, since "among other things, the Viewer includes all medical and nursing reports, tests performed, radiodiagnostic tests, patient allergies, their health problems and active diagnoses in the different centers in which they may be being treated, the specialties that monitor them for their health problems, the specifications of the episodes that have motivated their attendance to consultations or Emergencies both at the health center and at the hospitals, and the requests for interconsultations that they have requested."

For his part, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, pointed out that "the implementation of the Unified Medical Record Viewer in the José Molina Orosa University Hospital marks a before and after in the way health care is provided in Lanzarote. We are talking about a tool that improves coordination between services, speeds up diagnoses and, above all, places the patient at the center of the system."

Betancort thanked the Government of the Canary Islands and the SCS for their commitment to the modernization of the health system and to equity in care for all the islands. From Lanzarote we continue working for a more humane, efficient and connected health system.”

Advantages

The Unified Medical Record Viewer contains all the clinical data of all patients of the Canary Islands Health Service in a single, easily accessible portal for professionals and continuously updated, as well as the entire history of each user since there are computer records in each health center or hospital.

The forecast is that this summer the tool will be fully implemented in the public hospitals of the islands and in all Primary Care centers of the archipelago.

Progress of the pilot project of the viewer

The Viewer became operational in December as a pilot project between the Oncology services of the HUC, the University Hospital of La Palma and the Breña Baja Health Center. After this start-up, the pilot project has been rapidly extended to the rest of the islands and this technological tool is already fully available in the Health Areas of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura and, as of today, also in Lanzarote, as well as in the entire University Hospital of the Canary Islands, in Tenerife.

To carry out this deployment effectively, a progressive and flexible strategy has been adopted in coordination with each center, with the aim of optimizing resources and minimizing the impact on health care, a staggered approach that allows adjusting training and deployment times according to their workload and operational availability, thus guaranteeing a smooth and efficient transition.

Surgical robot for the Molina Orosa

Throughout the meeting, the manager of Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguia, announced that in these days the contracting for the supply, installation and commissioning of a robotic surgical equipment for the surgical area of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has been put out to tender.

The total investment of the surgical robot will reach 1,747,572 euros and contemplates an execution period of two months. This total item covers the supply, installation and commissioning of the medical and surgical equipment with which the health provision of the Molina Orosa Hospital is improved and reinforced.

The manager pointed out that “the implementation of this technology in our hospital will allow patients in Lanzarote to have access to state-of-the-art treatment, whose procedures are minimally invasive and allow a faster recovery of patients and shorter hospital stays. On the other hand, the surgical robot offers improved visualization and superior maneuverability, which translates into better clinical results.”

Likewise, Pablo Eguia stressed that the acquisition of this robotic surgery equipment may be key to attracting highly qualified professional medical specialists to our island in the immediate future.
