The Council of Government has approved this Monday, at the proposal of the General Directorate of Digital Transformation, the declaration of technological emergency in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, an exceptional measure whose objective is to expedite the implementation of a set of actions aimed at strengthening the computer system of the autonomous Executive and guaranteeing the best possible service to citizens.

The decision is part of the commitment of the Canary Islands Government to the digital modernization of the Public Administration, after detecting the need to provide the system with greater capacity, resilience and efficiency.

This declaration of emergency coincides with the failure of the servers of the Autonomous Community registered last week. In this sense, the general director of Digital Transformation, Guadalupe González Taño, pointed out “the need to adopt decisive and effective measures to provide our Community with greater technological muscle. The declaration of emergency allows us to move forward with maximum agility in that direction.”

The Government emphasizes that this measure reflects "once again the firm and courageous response capacity to technological challenges, always acting with the citizen at the center of decisions."

“Our objective is clear: to continue advancing in the digitization of public services as a key tool to improve people's lives,” added González Taño.

Six months to strengthen the system

The technological emergency will be in effect from July 1 to December 31, 2025, although it may be extended if necessary. During this period, the Government of the Canary Islands will launch a comprehensive package of actions to improve the technological structure of the autonomous Public Administration that will strengthen security, response capacity, operational efficiency and quality of digital care provided to citizens.

Among the measures approved this Monday by the Council of Government is the authorization to the Executive for the contracting through the urgent procedure of the services and resources necessary for the strengthening of the system, the streamlining in the execution of strategic technological contracts, the reinforcement of technical personnel and the authorization of overtime for the specialized teams that will work on the improvement and stabilization of the systems.

Commitment to a strong digital administration

The Government of the Canary Islands reaffirms its commitment to digital transformation as a tool to improve the quality of life of citizens, reduce procedures, guarantee equity in access to services and ensure the efficiency of the public sector.

Among the services provided by the Canary Islands Government and that this declaration will reinforce is the Electronic Headquarters and the General Access Point of the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, in which all the departments of the Government of the Canary Islands and the public bodies are integrated, with the exception of the Canary Islands Tax Agency and the Canary Islands Employment Service. It also includes the tools available to public employees, including the electronic Signature Platform, which allows the centralized management of documents, or the email service. It also manages the Atlante systems, linked to judicial management, and Rescan, in charge of the emergency system, which were not affected by the incident registered last week.
