The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands reports 47 positive cases of COVID-19 among the 61 members of the boat that arrived last Friday on the island of Fuerteventura. These people are already isolated and treated and are in good health. The Ministry of Health recalls that from the epidemiological perspective referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, these people do not pose an epidemiological risk since they undergo PCR testing upon arrival and are isolated.
The Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo, has requested a bilateral meeting with the Ministry of Health to address the migratory phenomenon and to request the State that outbreaks related to the arrival of this type of boat be listed separately in the national statistics since they have a management and a particularity apart from possible community infections. In this sense, the counselor also emphasizes the need to implement controls in ports and airports with tests at the destination itself, although he insists that the ideal situation would be to do it at the origin. These tests would not take place in a generalized way but focused on those origins with a complex epidemiological situation such as Brazil, Mexico or the United States, among others. The Canary Islands has presented the Ministry of Health with a pilot project to test this system in the island territory. In addition, Trujillo recalls that this same week the Outermost Regions (ORs) have requested the European Commission to implement this type of mechanism, especially in these isolated and vulnerable territories.
Normalized situation
Apart from the 47 new cases in Fuerteventura from a boat, in the last hours the situation in the Canary Islands is normalized with some new cases detected early thanks to the tracking system. In Tenerife, one more case has been reported related to a local outbreak that goes from 4 to 5 cases. In La Gomera this Saturday, PCR was performed on the only person isolated on the island and all their contacts, all of which tested negative, so the island is again free of COVID.
The Ministry of Health insists on maintaining security measures with a physical distance of 1.5 meters, the use of masks in closed public environments and in those open where it is not possible to maintain distance. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of hand washing. The Ministry especially alerts of the risk run in leisure places as well as in family and friends celebrations where more than half of the outbreaks are occurring throughout Spain. The Ministry of Health asks for citizen collaboration to be able to control this pandemic together.
