They warn that a public square in Arrecife is becoming a hotbed of garbage, alcohol, and drugs

A resident of Arrecife alerted this Thursday morning that the public square of Parque Simón Bolívar has become "a shithole park," where "day in and day out, garbage abounds, people drinking in the street, and sometimes, people using drugs."

This citizen has warned that this situation "is not solely" due to the bar that has opened on one of the sides of the square, where he has assured that they usually "play music at full volume and fights, shouts, and situations that we residents are tired of enduring occur."

In this regard, he added that there are people who come on their own, buy alcohol, and have drinking parties in the square.

"Day after day we can see men urinating on trees, in dumpsters, and even in other public spaces in the area, leaving a deplorable image and a situation that we residents have been enduring for years," he denounced.

Finally, he stated that "the most surprising thing is that, although the square is occasionally painted or conditioned to make it look a bit more decent, it seems that afterwards it is completely neglected again, to the point of being disgusting to cross this area where if you go in shorts, the flies will eat you." "The feeling we residents have is one of absolute abandonment," he concluded.

This citizen has posed several questions to the City Council: How many more years will we have to endure this? Why are people who have drinking parties, litter the square, urinate in public, or use drugs not fined? Why, when the police pass by and see people drinking or using drugs, do they not get out of the vehicle and act?

Finally, residents have denounced that they have been "seeing the exact same situations for years and it seems that no one is doing anything to solve it, when this park should be torn down and something decent built in this area."

"Could it be because we are not on the beachfront?" he questions. The resident, on behalf of other citizens in the area, has denounced that they have the right to enjoy a clean, safe, and quiet neighborhood. "We are not asking for anything extraordinary: simply that the area be taken care of and that the regulations be enforced," he concluded.
