On Sunday morning, the first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross was held, a cross triathlon event that took place in the tourist town of Puerto del Carmen and was enjoyed by the dozens of athletes who took part in it. Víctor del Corral, the main favorite to win, lived up to expectations and was proclaimed the winner of this first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross. In the women's category, Lucy Biddlestone made a great comeback in the running segment and crossed the finish line in first place.
From early in the morning, a great sporting atmosphere began to be felt in the Plaza de Las Naciones, the area where the nerve center of the Nu-Tri-Cross was located. The participants were arriving to deposit their bicycles and sports equipment in the box area, all under the watchful eye of the judges, who were in charge of ensuring that everything was in order. The cross triathlon consisted of a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer mountain bike ride, and a 5-kilometer run.
After ten in the morning, the triathletes started, with the participants in the men's category being the first to enter the water, and five minutes later the women and those competing in the team category did so. The British athlete Stephen Bayliss was the first to complete the 750 meters swim, with a time of 11 minutes and 3 seconds. He achieved a large advantage over Fernando Rodríguez and Víctor del Corral, although not enough to win this first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross.
Víctor del Corral, Spanish and European Cross Triathlon champion in 2012, made a great comeback in the mountain biking segment. Halfway through the course, he had already caught up with Stephen Bayliss and began to increase the difference, reaching the transition area with a large lead. Víctor del Corral cemented his victory in the running segment, which consisted of a mixed course of asphalt and beach sand.
The victory in this first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross went to Víctor del Corral, crossing the finish line with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 23 seconds. He was 1:53 ahead of Stephen Bayliss (01:14:16). And third across the finish line was the Lanzarote native Fernando Rodríguez (01:16:48), a member of the Tridente Tinajo team. The triathletes from Tridente Tinajo played a great role, leading the general classification in its first positions.
Great comeback by Lucy Biddlestone
In the women's category, Raquel Arostegui was the dominant force in the Nu-Tri-Cross, although she finally gave ground in the running segment and was overtaken by Lucy Biddlestone. The triathlete from the Anthus Triatlon team completed the swimming segment with a time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds, almost two and a half minutes ahead of Lucy Biddlestone. These positions were maintained during the mountain biking segment, although little by little the member of Tri Active Lanzarote was reducing the differences.
Lucy Biddlestone crossed the finish line as the winner of the Nu-Tri-Cross with a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes and 20 seconds. Second place went to Raquel Arostegui (1:38:19) and third was Laura Jane (1:44:59).
"Soy Team" winner in the team category
The team category was one of the great attractions of the first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross, with participants having the possibility of completing the course in teams composed of three triathletes, each of whom had to cover the course of one of the segments. This modality had the participation of 22 teams.
"Soy Team", composed of Martín, Suárez and Luz, was the winning team with a time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 49 seconds. The second position on the team podium went to "Una Vuelta Más", made up of Hernández, Guardia and Fernández (01:18.19). And third was the team "Tri122" (1:18:32).
Race for the little ones and awards ceremony
The little ones also had their leading role in this first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross, with a race of different distances adapted to each of the age groups. Boys and girls from the pre-Benjamin, Benjamin, Alevín, Infantil and Cadet categories participated, completing distances of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 meters. A participatory race, with all participants being awarded a small detail that verified their participation in the event.
The Nu-Tri-Cross concluded with the awards ceremony in both the general category and the different age groups. The first edition of Nu-Tri-Cross was jointly organized by the company Nutrición Canarias and Miguel Ángel Duque, the last Canary Islands Cross Triathlon champion. It is sponsored by BH ProAction Puerto del Carmen, Restaurante Vino+ Lanzarote, Mangacamisa, MC2ACTION, Ayuntamiento de Tías and Cabildo de Lanzarote.
