Unión Sur Yaiza delivered a blow last weekend by defeating the co-leader of the Third Division RFEF in matchday 27 of the competition, San Fernando (0-2).
The victory of the verdinegros in the Ciudad Deportiva de Maspalomas serves to put distance between them and the dangerous positions in the standings. Unión Sur Yaiza is close to securing permanence, an unthinkable situation a few dates ago, which shows that the changes made have caused a substantial improvement in the team, on the way to achieving the goal of the season after three consecutive victories.
The club had high hopes for the match against the co-leader, San Fernando. Finally, they have been confirmed. A hard-fought match, with the locals pressing hard in the first part of the match, although the sensations were already known to the verdinegros, seeing two teams fighting face to face and not the leader and a team fighting to avoid relegation. After the first few minutes of probing, UD San Fernando had a couple of options. The first, after an erroneous exit by Álex Medina that the defense took out from under the goalposts and, later, a shot by Héctor Ortega that did not find the goal.
Yaiza was clear that the objective was to contain the local offensive outbursts. Half an hour later, Adrián Hernández tried without luck. Before the break, Álex Medina became gigantic to solve a header from Farías and a new shot from Adrián Hernández. Thanks to the visiting goalkeeper, the score was tied at zero at halftime. The second half was going to change the luck of both teams. San Fernando saw how the match became complicated after the expulsions of Héctor Ortega and Omar. In Yaiza, a goal from Emiliano Trovento opened the scoring and Juanca sealed the victory for the greater happiness of the verdinegros fans.
In the 7th minute of the second half, Trovento, a usual suspect in Yaiza's offensive bonanza, scored the first visiting goal with a shot from the edge of the area. Fermín could do nothing to prevent it.
Shortly after, Juan Carlos Socorro's team sought to return to the tie with a shot from Adrián that went over the crossbar. After Yaiza's goal, twenty minutes into the second half, the serious local problems began with the second yellow card for defender Omar Velázquez.
Miguel Fernández's team was not going to let the prey escape and sealed the victory with a goal from Juanca that put the score at 0-2. Although the locals did not give up, the match was not going to improve for them. With Álex Medina in his line, bordering on the Napoleonic, San Fernando saw the second expulsion, that of Héctor Ortega for, supposedly, headbutting a southern player.
Nothing else was going to move. With two more players and with an advantage on the scoreboard, Yaiza was going to work hard so that nothing would change despite the local attempts.
The coach of Unión Sur Yaiza, Miguel Fernández, was very happy after the victory, “we have had very good sensations throughout the match. Today the players have done a spectacular job. The truth is that there is a very good atmosphere in the team and that shows on the field. We have worked like animals and the prize has been to win at the leader's home and get a little closer to our goal, which is permanence”, concludes the verdinegro coach.
After the victory, Unión Sur Yaiza moves even further away from the dangerous area of the table with 32 points, sitting eight points away from the relegation places. The matchday was favorable for the verdinegros because Ibarra, with 24 points, lost at home to UD Lanzarote (3-1), Gran Tarajal fell at home to Las Palmas' subsidiary (2-0) and Estrella was again thrashed (6-0) at home to Tenerife B. San Fernando's defeat has caused them to lose the lead to Mensajero, the current leader of the Third Federation group.
The southerners could certify permanence next Saturday, and for this they need to beat CD Tenerife in the match that will be played from 5:30 p.m. With 9 points at stake, Yaiza only needs to beat Tenerife B next Saturday, April 8, from 5:30 p.m. With those three points in their pocket, Yaiza would have to visit Marino (4/16) and receive the leader, Mensajero, with no other objective than to enjoy the permanence achieved.
