UD Lanzarote faced Real Racing Club de Santander in the first round of the Copa S.M. El Rey, almost achieving the feat of eliminating the leader of LaLiga Hypermotion. Despite the 3-4 defeat against the Cantabrians, the "rojillos" leave with their heads held high and proud of what they did against one of the historic teams of Spanish football, with more than 1,200 spectators enjoying the show offered at the Municipal Pancho Bermúdez.
The match began with Racing de Santander dominating, although UD Lanzarote shook off the visitors' dominance as the minutes passed. Ale Fuentes starred in the first dangerous play, with a run down the left wing and a shot that ended up hitting goalkeeper Parera's body.
When UD Lanzarote was at its best, Racing de Santander scored the first two goals through Karrikaburu and Ekain. The "rojillos" reduced the deficit before the break, with Ale Fuentes taking advantage of a pass from his teammate Ale Cruz, who anticipated one of the defenders of the Cantabrian team.
The second half continued with a slight dominance from Racing de Santander, a team that managed to increase the difference in two quick plays. Jeremy made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute, and just two minutes later, Suleiman surprised Ruymán with a shot to the near post.
UD Lanzarote did not give up and even got back into the game. In the 78th minute, Ayoze Pérez took a free kick, Agoney headed it at the far post, and Ale Fuentes headed it into the back of the net from close range. And just two minutes later, Álvaro Iglesias broke down the left, passing for Ale Fuentes to complete his great night.
UD Lanzarote tried until the end of the match, putting Racing de Santander in trouble, a team that ended up asking for the time and wasting seconds in each of the actions. A defeat that leaves a great taste in the mouths of the fans, seeing how the "rojillos" faced the leader of LaLiga Hypermotion.
