The thirty-first edition of the Ironman Lanzarote has started this Saturday at 07:00 hours in Puerto del Carmen. The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, was in charge of giving the starting signal to the more than 1,000 triathletes who jumped into the water at Playa Grande. All of them will try to win the "iron man or woman" award.

As Ángel Víctor Torres told the media, "The Canary Islands are a territory for high-level sports, as demonstrated by this event that begins with a marathon, which then includes 180 kilometers by bicycle for the participating athletes and ends with four kilometers running." For the president, the fact that these events bring together the best in the world in the archipelago also means projecting the islands on a planetary scale and, therefore, he reaffirmed the regional government's commitment to these competitions, "since having these events here generates economy and represents a platform for tourism promotion of our land."

Participants will have to complete 3.8 kilometers of swimming, then travel 180 kilometers by bicycle and, finally, complete a marathon of 42.2 kilometers along the maritime avenue between Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife. All this, within the established cut-off time: 17 hours.

Lanzarote has been preparing for this event for weeks, one of the most important in the sporting calendar of the year, and which is considered by many to be one of the toughest tests in the world.
