Goodbye to a legend and reference of information. Heaven gains an unrepeatable chronicler. Pascual Calabuig has passed away this Saturday at the age of 95 on the Island after suffering a stroke more than a month ago. The journalist had the Gold and Diamond Insignia of the Gran Canaria entity and was present at the last official match of the UD against Málaga in Gran Canaria a few weeks ago in the box. His unmistakable style filled the pages of LA PROVINCIA / DLP during the last decades. Between the sardonic humor and the art of the pen, he reported on the leap to the highest category of UD Las Palmas in 1951 and has been present in all the feats and achievements of the yellow club.
Calabuig (Valencia, 1924) began his journalistic activity in Canarias Deportiva and in 1950 he was part of the team of radio narrators Radio Las Palmas. Carrusel Deportivo put him in the spotlight. Only a year before (1949) UD Las Palmas had been constituted and Pascual Calabuig fell in love with the lyricism of the ball and the feeling. He played a key and decisive role in the creation of the Gran Canaria club.
Calabuig had a close relationship with the island of Lanzarote. In fact, he was the town crier of the San Ginés festivities in 2013 as he was a regular in the retransmission of the San Ginés Football tournaments. In addition, the sports journalist was passionate about Lanzarote, its landscapes and its people.
