The celebration of the III Memorial bearing his name began with a minute of silence in memory of Carmelo Hernández Díaz. Once again, Lola Reyes Domínguez, his widow, was present, and she was presented with several bouquets of flowers on behalf of the participating fleet, closing the emotional remembrance with a great ovation for the sailor who passed away on February 15, 2019.
The warning signal was given with a wind of 85º that was close to 10 knots of intensity. The regatta took place with intensity with times matching those of the second edition, the "Sorondongo IV" invested in real time 02:05:48 compared to the 02:05:46 with which the "Antigua Craiova" completed the course in the second edition held on February 15, 2020.
After the start, the boats took a mark buoy to head to the Island of Lobos, which would be taken to port, after rounding Lobos, they set course for the finish line located in Marina Rubicón. The "Sorondongo IV" of Miguel Ángel Armas Matallana would be the first to cross the finish line after covering the 17 miles in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 48 seconds. Next came the "Antigua Craiova – Lanzarote Sailing Paradise" of Ye Cabrera Morales, which did so 7 minutes later, the third to arrive was the "Katanga" of Ray Pattenden, which did so almost 3 minutes later.
In the ORC 2 group, the first to reach the finish line was the "Alaia I" of Patricio Aldecoa with a time of 02:29:44, followed by the "Altamar" skippered by Francisco Curbelo, which did so 4 minutes
later.
The "Aletheia" of José Luis Hernández with a real time of 02:37.06 was the first to cross the finish line in the Sin Spi class, followed by the "Pionene" of Miguel Pérez in02:41:44, the podium was closed by the "Manitú" of Pedro Rodríguez Borges with a time of 03:08:30.
After the completion of the "III Memorial Carmelo Hernández Díaz", the awards ceremony was held at the Flag Ship in Marina Rubicón, the organization in charge of Lanzarote Sailing Paradise offered the participants a chickpea stew. The event was attended by the president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Julio Romero Ortega, representing the Hernández Reyes family were Lola Reyes Domínguez and her daughter Ana Hernández Reyes; Ye Cabrera as the organizing manager of Lanzarote Sailing Paradise and the sculptor Juan José Bonilla, author of the design and confection of the trophies.
The crew of the "Antigua Craiova – Lanzarote Sailing Paradise" presented Lola Reyes with a lithograph of Carmelo after she presented the winner's trophy to Ye Cabrera, who repeats victory in the Carmelo Hernández Díaz Memorial.
The awards ceremony had more surprises, with the red lantern being awarded to the "Naroe" of Norberto Delgado, who could not participate due to a medical issue. The Ecological Trophy was also awarded, created as Ye Cabrera said: "we are sailors and we love the sea, it is our duty to keep it clean". The trophy was awarded to the boat "Amiga" that participated as a support boat collecting a mattress that was floating.
Julio Romero Ortega, president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, presented the Honorary Patron Trophy to Ana Hernández Reyes, Carmelo's daughter who accompanied her mother on the emotional day that remembered Carmelo.
