We are in luck: the installation of two wind turbines in Punta de los Vientos to power water desalination with clean energy is undoubtedly one of the great headlines that 2016 will leave us.
This is the fulfillment of a political and social aspiration of more than a decade ago, when Lanzarote became convinced of the urgency of starting to take steps towards energy self-sufficiency through the use of renewable sources, inexhaustible and more than generous with our archipelago.
We know that changing habits is complicated, but we cannot deny that step by step, little by little, awareness of the change in the energy cycle is spreading in our society.
The scenes of the demonstrations where thousands of Lanzarote residents said no to oil, an expensive, polluting and aggressive fuel with the environment, and said yes to renewable energies are still fresh in our memory.
The commissioning of two wind turbines, such as the installation of photovoltaic panels in public buildings, the financial aid for the acquisition of domestic equipment for obtaining electricity from the sun, the bonuses for electric vehicles... All this puts us on the right track.
We must continue in this direction and the city of Arrecife and its government are moving in this direction, in whose name I convey the pride of hosting responsible desalination in our municipality.
We want a clean and friendly capital of the Biosphere and a neighborhood that is the protagonist of public space. We want to be part of the advancement of renewable energies, the protection of the environment and the sustainability of development.
And we want it now. We are not going to wait until tomorrow: the future is today.
Eva de Anta, Mayor of Arrecife
