The biography of the politician

June 27 2025 (20:09 WEST)

Juan Francisco, 18 years old

Dad, I'm thinking about studying Medicine, I have doubts, because friends have told me it's difficult. I don't know what to do, whether to study Medicine or decide on other studies.

Juan, your friends are right. A career in Medicine is very demanding, requires a lot of study, and you never stop studying. There are six years of training, and then, if you want to specialize, it would be four or five more years. It is a very sacrificial job that requires a lot of effort and vocation. Think about it carefully. I will support you in any decision you make.

Luisa, 19 years old.

Daddy, I would like to study Engineering. I like mathematics and computer science, and then it has the advantage that there are many different types of engineering, but even so, I'm not sure. Your opinion would be useful to see what I could do next year.

Luisa, although there are many different engineering fields, their knowledge is compatible with each other, so the range of possibilities is very wide. They are very technical and complicated careers, but with many opportunities. I have full confidence in your abilities so that you will be an engineer in the future.

Baldomero, 26 years old.

Father. I want to be a politician. What do I do?

Baldomero, what I want is for you to do something. Study or work, but do something, you're old enough to not keep living at your parents' house. The few politicians I know have primary education, a few have studied higher education, but have never practiced, and the fewest have practiced for a few years; all of them have been dedicated to politics for many years. Do what you want.

These parent-child conversations in this story are not far from our reality. Nowadays, more than in previous times, our politicians, a majority of them, have a deficient education. They have not studied enough, they have not bothered to train, educate themselves, acquire the necessary tools to effectively fulfill the difficult Art and Science of Politics. It is not understandable that, to practice, we return to the beginning of the story, Medicine, or Engineering, many years of study are required, and the politician is not required to have a minimum of aptitudes that have been demonstrated by monitoring and evaluated in some educational center to perform this job. No one has graduated as a POLITICIAN.

However, the Science of Politics exists. It is included in studies called POLITICAL SCIENCE. It is a 4-year degree. There are Faculties of Political Science in Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Murcia, Santiago, and in many other cities. It is a multidisciplinary training that includes knowledge on different topics such as economics, sociology, history and law, among others. Like all Science, it prepares the student, based on scientific evidence, everything related to this task, so that their work in the future, of great responsibility, is useful for the society in which we live, because the good or bad execution of their work will determine the future of many families, of many people. I do not know, at least in our Island, any politician who has completed Political Science studies.

But the reality of our politicians is very different from what it should be. We are always with the same song. What we have had to live, and what, by right, we should live. Our life, which is facilitated or, as is most common, hindered by our political class.

The biography of the politician. It is enough that we browse the biography of our politicians, not only from our Island, but from the entire Archipelago, from the entire Spain, from many countries, entire, so that we realize that their studies and professional careers have been in a majority of cases very poor or non-existent. In this we have an advantage so that our curiosity is satisfied, because there is a law in our country that facilitates it. Specifically, the “Law C9/2013, of December 9, on transparency, access to public information and good governance”. This Law indicates, among its many articles, the following: “The curriculum vitae of senior officials will be published, after their appointment, on the web portal of the body, organization or entity in which they provide their services. In the assessment of training, the academic knowledge acquired will be taken into account and in the assessment of experience, special attention will be paid to the nature, complexity and level of responsibility of the positions held, which are related to the content and functions of the position for which they are appointed”.

That is, on the Internet, facilitated by this Law, we type the name and surnames of any politician that occurs to them, and add curriculum or biography and, I can assure you, they will not come out of their amazement. My perplexity lasted a whole hour. This is well known in our Island, where everyone knows each other, for better or for worse, and the picaresque of the conejeros, has made a politician have the nickname, for his biography, as “The bartender“, and another politician, for his biography as well, the nickname of “The butcher”. Our political panorama is beginning to look more and more like a market. This picaresque of our people is something anecdotal and has no importance, but it has its grace, and also reflects the feeling of the population about the matter at hand. The conejeros, and the canarios in general, have always had an extraordinary sense of humor. We have to say that any trade or profession that is executed with honesty and professionalism will always be respectable and honorable. But there remain all these politicians of whom we doubt very much if they should really be occupying the positions they occupy. No. We do not deserve these politicians.
