Perspectives for tourism employment in the face of the challenges of absenteeism, recruitment and retention, and AI

On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Puerto del Carmen as a tourist destination, this town hosts the Conference “Tourism and Employment: Reinventing Oneself to Survive”. The meeting, which will take place next Friday, October 2nd, in the auditorium of the El Fondeadero Civic Center, is born with the mission of offering practical solutions and strategic vision in the face of the structural transformation that the main industry of the Canary Islands is undergoing.

Challenges of maximum relevance

The tourism sector is facing an unprecedented metamorphosis where human capital management has consolidated as a critical success variable. Hotels, restaurants, and tourism service companies face a key challenge with people management. The conference emerges as a space for technical and human analysis for companies, active professionals, and young talents who must navigate a market conditioned by:

• The restrictions of the labor environment and the difficulty in maintaining quality standards in service.
• The profound evolution of the needs, expectations, and values of employees.
• The peculiarities and development strategies that must make a difference in the booming Canary tourism market to guarantee long-term viability.

Panel of experts

To address these challenges, the event will feature a panel of specialists with recognized careers who will connect general trends with the operational reality of the islands:

• Eugenia Soriano: Expert in personnel selection and HR consulting (Nexo Canarias). Her intervention will be key to guiding professionals in their selection and talent retention processes. Also focusing on young people, on how to stand out and project value in modern selection processes, currently governed by algorithms and digital filtering tools.
• Javier Ondarra: Specialist in organizational strategies and labor commitment (Top Human Leaders 2025). He will provide a disruptive vision to combat absenteeism through the construction of a culture of commitment, responding to one of the most complex problems in current team management.
• Sonia Martínez Alcalá: Expert in the development of work environments in the hotel sector and president of Gehocan, the most important association of Human Resources professionals in the Canary Islands. She will analyze how to transform infrastructures and processes to create efficient, sustainable, and, above all, attractive workspaces, a determining factor for the retention and loyalty of internal talent.

Artificial Intelligence and professional development

The round table, moderated by Techy Acosta, will address, among other topics, the impact of technology on employment. It will be analyzed how Artificial Intelligence is redefining professional careers. This section will be specially designed to provide young professionals with a roadmap on the new skills necessary to thrive and lead in an era where AI must act as an enhancer of human talent and not as a substitute.
