In May 2023, I had the great honor of obtaining the support of the society of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to obtain a position as councilor for Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista in an institution that I have always looked at with great affection as it is the highest authority of my island, where I was born, grew up, and developed my profession.
Back then, the negotiations after the elections were aimed at my possible entry into the government group together with CC and PP, a fact that both my party and I strongly rejected, considering that with two councilors from Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista in the opposition, it was neither ethical nor moral to allow only one of us to enter.
I emphasize these principles of ethics and morality because in my only year as a councilor, and in this subsequent year, what I have missed the most on our island is precisely that, ethics and morality. Because not everything is worth it. Values and principles define us and drive us to be honest people. Values and principles that are needed to demonstrate to the population that they have chosen their representatives correctly.
After a year as a non-released councilor by my own decision, exercising my work while overseeing the government, due to circumstances beyond my control, I resigned from my position without any other option, to occupy my position as a civil servant in the same institution that I represented. A position that I earned with effort, dedicating 3 years of my life to studying a tough opposition that with sweat and many tears bore fruit.
Today, after almost a year of silence so as not to interfere between the exercise of politics and the professional activity that I have to perform in the Cabildo, I write these words with accumulated anger, sadness, and frustration seeing that human values are disappearing in the political system of our island, and I am not talking about any specific party or any institution, but about the political class in general. In whose hands is the society of Lanzarote? How is it possible that there can be people who put their personal interests and their permanence in positions of power before defending a society truncated by increasingly pressing social situations?
However, I still believe that this island, my home, deserves a transparent policy of construction and reconstruction, with ethical and moral values, with foundations based on respect for the society that elects them. And I clarify, no, it is not my goal to return to that position, but rather to encourage honest people, with great values of morality, ethics, and defense of public services, to take a step forward in politics. To demonstrate to our population that politics can be done without lies, or turncoats, or destruction, or obsession with criticism, demonstrating that politics is the most human activity that exists and that good can prevail over evil.
It is about building and rebuilding from humility and respect for the entire society that places its trust. To be a voice for all those who cannot raise it. To protect and care for them. That is the goal. The rest is moral and ethical baseness.
