The general secretary of UGT in Lanzarote, César Reyes, has announced that the workers of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex signed a strike notice this Monday for next January 7. This measure has been adopted to demand their extra pay, which the Lanzarote Council has not deposited into their payrolls.

"The workers are experiencing a situation of uncertainty. Faced with the non-payment of the Christmas bonus, the employees are very upset," said César Reyes. This payment should have been paid by the Lanzarote Council to the workers last week.

They were expecting this bonus in their salary, as they had a meeting a month ago, in which they were not told that they would not receive the Christmas bonus. Therefore, the employees "do not trust" the Council now and UGT has asked the first institution in writing for "a commitment to pay this extra pay", as well as "a commitment that guarantees workers their continuity after the service is put out to public tender".

Lots of garbage after the Three Wise Men

"There is discouragement within the staff, which has led them to consider this pressure measure. The strike will harm the garbage collection service, the center and the clean points", insisted the general secretary of UGT on the island.

And the workers are planning to go on strike on January 7, the day after the Three Wise Men, when a lot of garbage accumulates. "The risk is there, it is latent. But this situation has to be resolved as soon as possible, we want a commitment from the Council", insisted César Reyes.

Labor inspections

The general secretary of UGT in Lanzarote has also informed Radio Lanzarote that the Prevention of Occupational Risks delegates of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex have filed several complaints about the "anomalies" in the landfill. "Several labor inspections have been carried out and we are waiting for the resolutions of the complaints", said César Reyes.

According to him, some "anomalies" have been detected in Zonzamas that "could endanger the health of workers".
