The Yaiza City Council has joined the preventive campaign launched by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands aimed at adolescents on the occasion of the 2017 carnival festivities in order to avoid the spread of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. To this end, it is intended to raise awareness among young people about the risk of having sex without using a condom. The institutions will distribute 1,500 condoms during the southern festivities scheduled between March 24 and 26.
The mayor of Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, has formalized the municipal adhesion to this campaign for the Playa Blanca Carnival in a meeting with the director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Erasmo García de León, held this Thursday at the Consistory
From the City Council they have indicated that although the Carnival is only a conjunctural reason, the substance of the message is applicable to the daily life of adolescents and adults. Therefore, they have recalled that all people are susceptible and potential targets of sexually transmitted infections if they have risky sexual practices and that a condom, when used correctly, is a very reliable method to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.
Thus, they have stressed that the general recommendation is to always carry a condom, also warning that substances such as alcohol increase the probability of putting yourself at risk and not taking the necessary precautions.
