The Yaiza City Council has sent the Cabildo of Lanzarote a legal report that concludes that the island institution is directly responsible for the care and conservation of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, in the south of the island. The document, prepared at the request of a provision signed by Mayor Óscar Noda, indicates that this is expressly established by the Conservation Standards of this protected area.
Noda emphasizes that the City Council has been carrying out actions that are not its responsibility, such as repairing the dirt tracks that lead to the beaches of Papagayo and the campsite, renovating signage, or general cleaning of the area. "We have been repairing the dirt tracks with municipal resources, but we believe that the time has come for the Cabildo to truly commit to assuming its responsibilities," he said.
The mayor requests administrative collaboration and sufficient technical and economic resources from the island corporation, chaired by Oswaldo Betancort, to guarantee the correct conservation of the natural space. He also proposes holding a broad meeting, of a technical and political nature, with the participation of different areas of the Cabildo, the Biosphere Reserve Council, and the groups represented in the First Corporation.
The City Council recalls that the Basic Law of the Local Regime limits the exercise of powers that are not its own, unless the financial sustainability of the municipality is compromised or services are duplicated with another Administration. In this sense, Yaiza concludes that it must adhere to its responsibilities up to the limit of the protected area, where the Cabildo's competence begins.
