Compromiso por Haría has proposed in this Monday morning's Plenary Session on April 13 to grant the naming of a street to Don Enrique Dorta Afonso. The initiative, which comes from his family, friends, and admirers of his work, aims to highlight his legacy and establish for posterity a reference to his immense contribution to Hariana and Canarian society.
D. Enrique Dorta Afonso, born in Haría in 1925 developed his training in the Seminary of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he entered at an early age and completed his studies with priestly ordination,
subsequently obtaining a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in Theology. His pastoral career developed in various parishes, especially highlighting his prolonged work in the parish of Nuestra Señora de laEncarnación de Haría between 1953 and 1970.
Beyond their religious vocation, their contribution to the educational field was decisive for the cultural development of the municipality. In an era when access to education was limited, they actively promoted the education of young people, even starting to teach classes from their own home and providing educational materials to those who needed them most. Aware of the population's educational shortcomings, especially in humanistic subjects, they promoted initiatives that favored access to knowledge and the improvement of the local educational level.
Among his most notable achievements is the founding, in 1954, of an academy that laid the foundations for the subsequent Colegio Libre Adoptado de Haría, created in 1967. This educational project marked a turning
point in the education of numerous generations of young people in the municipality, contributing decisively to the academic, social, and cultural development of the town. Thanks to his drive, Haría came to have a significant number of teaching professionals trained in this institution.
His work developed in a context of economic and social difficulties, where families had to make great efforts to guarantee the education of their children. Despite this, the commitment, dedication, and vision of D. Enrique allowed these barriers to be overcome, generating a positive impact that transcended his era.
Mr. Enrique Dorta Afonso is, furthermore, "Favorite Son of the noble town of Haría" as of April 23, 1983, thus recognizing his pedagogical, cultural, and social work. Likewise, he was town crier for the patron saint festivities of San Juan Bautista de Haría in 1984.
They urge it to be an institutional agreement
From Compromiso por Haría they urge the plenary to "support this proposal of which the formation considers itself a mere representative of civil society". For that reason, they invite the different groups that it
compose to "show their conformity with said proposal and that the decision be taken unanimously".
In the organization they consider that the figure of Mr. Enrique Dorta Afonso "represents an example of dedication, vocation of service, and commitment to the progress of his people. And that this initiative, furthermore, constitutes a fair, honest and sincere recognition, that serves as a reminder of his contribution, and inspires the new generations of Harianos".
