Coalición Canaria in the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa will present a motion in the next plenary session to promote the unification of fees and guarantee zero cost for parking reservations for people with reduced mobility (PMR) in the seven municipalities of the island.
The initiative, defended by the spokesperson for CC in the insular Corporation, Samuel Martín, aims to put an end to the differences existing between municipal tax ordinances, which currently cause some people with reduced mobility to incur costs for processing space reservations, occupation of public roads, or the installation of corresponding signage.
“We cannot allow a person with reduced mobility to have to pay to exercise such a basic right as being able to park near their home or workplace. Accessibility cannot depend on the municipality in which one resides or on the economic capacity of each family,” states Martín.
Coalición Canaria emphasizes that a parking space reserved for a person with reduced mobility does not constitute a privilege or an appropriation of public roads, but rather a necessary measure to guarantee personal autonomy, safety, and equal opportunities.
“We are talking about eliminating economic and administrative barriers that directly affect people who already face mobility difficulties. The Cabildo must lead a coordinated response so that in Lanzarote there is a single criterion and no one has to pay a single euro for the reservation and signage of the space they need,” affirms the nationalist spokesperson.
An insular diagnosis and coordination between the seven town councils
The motion proposes five specific agreements. Firstly, the development of an insular diagnosis to determine the number and location of public parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, as well as to assess compliance with legally established standards.
Likewise, CC proposes urging the seven town councils of Lanzarote to coordinate to unify the criteria of their tax ordinances in relation to nominal PMR parking spaces, linked to the residence or workplace of the beneficiaries.
The proposal also includes promoting the total exemption of processing fees, public highway occupation, and signage installation costs for those who meet the requirements of the PMR card.
Furthermore, Coalición Canaria proposes that the Cabildo offer technical and legal assistance to the town councils that request it to expedite the modification of their fiscal ordinances, as well as to transfer the agreement to the third sector and disability associations of Lanzarote for their knowledge and adherence.
“Equal rights must be real throughout the island. It makes no sense for the same accessibility need to be free in one municipality and involve an economic cost in another. With this motion, we want to move towards a more just, accessible, and committed Lanzarote for people,” concludes Samuel Martín.
