The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, inaugurated this Tuesday the first of the events that this House celebrates to commemorate Canary Islands Day.
The Parliament's exhibition hall hosts an exhibition of traditional costumes from the islands until next Sunday.
“Dressing in habit was a way of paying a promise for a favor granted to a saint or a virgin; that implied dressing in garments like the ones we have in the exhibition,” Astrid Pérez pointed out.
The exhibition, made by Ubaldo Vestimenta, is an example of the importance of this date for the Parliament in the history of the islands. “This commemoration was born in this institution, with the date of the first parliamentary session, on May 30, 1983,” the president indicated.
David Hernández, responsible for the exhibition, highlighted at the inauguration the tireless work of his brother Ubaldo Hernández, who died in 2020, in the maintenance and dissemination of the traditional clothing of the islands. In his words, “in this exhibition we want to show this custom, now lost in the islands, which was practiced above all by the peasant population, always very rooted in their religious beliefs,” David Hernández assured.
Another of the highlights this Tuesday is the performance of Besay Pérez, a renowned tenor from Tenerife, who will take a journey through the most important songs of the folklore of the islands, in the Parliament's Patio de Honor.
During the week, the facade of the parliamentary headquarters will be illuminated with the colors of the flag of the Canary Islands and on May 30 the House will once again celebrate its open days until Sunday, June 1.
