The Tinajo City Council has launched a savings plan, in which one of the novel measures is to turn off half of the public lighting after 11 p.m. A measure with which the mayor of the municipality, Jesús Machín, believes that it will be possible to save around 100,000 or 120,000 euros at the end of the year. "And maybe even 150,000 euros," he adds.
The measure was launched this Monday, February 13. "One street lamp is turned off yes and one no, to save almost 50 percent of public lighting", Machín explained, before the microphones of Radio Lanzarote.
In addition, the initiative also affects municipal facilities, such as sports centers and cultural centers. "In the sports courts, we want to have a system so that when there is no one playing, it turns off automatically, or that when the facilities are used for training, only 50 percent is used. And in the cultural centers, when we are not using the facilities, they should be turned off."
Self-financing
In addition, Machín has announced other "savings" plans, which will also affect the activities that are organized in the municipality, so that they can be self-financed. "If a course is organized for 10 euros, maybe now they have to pay 12, but the idea is that it is 100 percent self-financed," he explained.
The mayor of Tinajo has announced that "more cuts will be made" in this year's budget. "We have the bases prepared, although we want to study them well and correct something, so that they are as equitable as possible. There is also a cut in sports, which we would be talking about 30 percent, in youth, in culture, in celebrations..., in everything."
And, according to Machín, this year's budget will be "scarcely" around 6 million euros. "If at the end of the year we can save around 500,000 or 600,000 euros in everything, it would be a very important saving," the mayor concluded.
