The Tías City Council celebrates the incorporation of its three Early Childhood and Primary Education Centers (CEIP) into the Ecocomedores program of the Government of the Canary Islands, becoming the first municipality to have this service in all its schools: Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, Concepción Rodríguez Artiles, and La Asomada-Mácher.
In total, about 440 people are served, including students and teachers in this figure, thus consolidating a firm commitment to healthy and local food in school canteens, as the service is carried out by two companies connected with organic and zero-kilometer products.
The implementation of the Ecocomedores project in the three schools in the municipality was promoted by the Tías City Council through the coordinated work of the Social Welfare and Education departments, with the involvement of the council's Office of Agroecology and Rural Development. The deadline is currently open for families to register for the next school year.
The mayor, José Juan Cruz, the deputy mayor and councilor for Social Welfare, Nicolás Saavedra, and the councilor for Education Miriam Hernández, recently visited the CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, where they were able to verify the organization of the dining room for about 190 diners.
Adherence to this program has allowed to significantly improve the quality of food for the boys and girls using school canteens, incorporating fresh, seasonal, and higher nutritional value products, mostly from the island itself.
Likewise, this initiative represents a boost for organic fruit and vegetable producers in Lanzarote, who see their marketing opportunities expanded through a short channel, favoring the local economy and reducing environmental impact.
