The Tías City Council is making an assessment of the damages caused by the storm Emma, which, in addition to aggravating the loss of sand on the beaches, also lifted part of the paving of El Muellito de Playa Chica.

Several teams of City Council operators removed this Friday the debris generated in the area of El Muellito, where the force of the sea lifted several tiles from the pavement and threw the waste into an area near the promenade and public toilets.

The mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, who has been in the area to check the effects of the storm on the coast of Puerto del Carmen, has asked the municipal engineer of Public Works for "a global assessment of the damages recorded and a plan to be executed to correct and repair the damages that are of municipal responsibility".

Actions pending authorizations from Coasts and Heritage

Pancho Hernández recalled that a section of Avenida de las Playas has worsened its breakwater due to the loss of sand and the force of the tide. In this part, next to Playa Grande, the City Council indicates that the action will be subject to the mandatory authorizations from Coasts and Heritage of the Cabildo de Lanzarote. The Emma storm has also aggravated the loss of sand in Playa Chica and Playa Grande, where the Council recalls that the Department of Beaches "has been working since 2017 on a global project for the regeneration of aggregates with the possible extraction of sand from sandbanks located off the coast of Puerto del Carmen.

The City Council points out that the extraction actions require sectoral authorizations from the Demarcation of Coasts of the Canary Islands and the Vice-Ministry of Territorial Policy of the Government of the Canary Islands. In this sense, it is pointed out that the mayor already addressed this initiative in a recent meeting with the government delegate to achieve the approval of Coasts if it were viable and to have the relevant environmental approvals.
