The Lanzarote Water Consortium has definitively granted 103,165.68 euros in one hundred grants to install or rehabilitate tanks and build or repair cisterns in Lanzarote and La Graciosa. As reported by the public institution, the measure is part of the actions promoted in response to the water emergency and seeks to reinforce water storage capacity in homes, homeowners' associations, and agricultural holdings.

The definitive resolution was published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, and the decree also provides for the publication of the resolution and its annexes on the notice board and in the electronic headquarters of the Consortium.

The president of the Cabildo and the Water Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort, highlights that “these grants are part of the measures included in the water emergency declaration and aim to support families and the primary sector to improve their reserves and also recover our water culture. Tanks and cisterns have been fundamental in the history of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and continue to be a resource that we must conserve and maintain in good condition.”

Betancort points out that “addressing water problems requires acting on production, renewing networks, and improving storage. With these grants, we bring that effort closer to the citizens and support those who invest in conditioning their facilities to have greater reserves.”

The recovery of private storage systems is part of the cross-cutting measures provided for in the water emergency declaration. The call allows for support for both new installations and the rehabilitation of deteriorated or disused tanks and cisterns, promoting their recovery for domestic supply and agricultural activity.

For his part, the Water Councilor, Domingo Cejas, explains that “these one hundred grants respond to specific needs of individuals, companies, and homeowners' associations. Repairing a cistern or installing a tank allows for a reserve that helps to cope with supply interruptions and improves the conditions of homes and holdings.”

Cejas adds that “storage is a necessary part of improving the water cycle. This line of support facilitates citizen participation in that objective and allows them to undertake actions that, in many cases, had been postponed due to their cost.”

The grants cover up to 70% of the eligible investment, with a general maximum of 1,400 euros per beneficiary and specific conditions for community facilities. They include rigid and flexible tanks, the construction of cisterns and the repair or rehabilitation of existing ones, as well as the disinfection of domestic cisterns.
